Singing a bit of this and that
THEY may be a just a small group, but on November 5, members of the Warwick Choral Society showed they have a lot to offer.
The group of about 13 singers put on a special concert - A Little Bit of This and That - to raise money for ongoing costs.
As well as performing a series of songs themselves, the group invited a number of singers and musicians to join in, and the result was an eclectic range of song choices and an afternoon of fun.
Choir director Alison Baistow said feedback from the concert had been great.
"Everyone seemed to like the variety," she said.
"Some of it was unknown to us on the day.
"The artists we invited came highly recommended and they certainly were spectacular."
Two of the guest artists, Noralyn and Naomi Jowett, were relatives of choir member Jennifer Marshall while Alissa Bermingham was the niece of another, Frances Symonds.
They were joined by the likes of The Grumpies and jazz musicians Rebecca Holeszko, Sam Lane, Michael Spiller and Helen Bruggemann.
Ms Baistow said the group had hoped to raise $500 from the day, which would go towards ongoing costs.
"We have to loan our own hall and insurance is a killer, and costs far more than we made (Saturday)," she said.
"On top of that, there's electricity, rates and ongoing maintenance."
The choir director, who has been in her role for 10 years, said high costs were made harder with the low number of members.
She said the group was always looking for people keen to warm up their voices too.
"It's really hard to attract new members and it's very hard to get men to join," she said.
"I think so many of them think they can't sing, or perhaps they perceive us to be an older group and don't want to come.
"For various reasons membership comes and goes. We're all getting older and people, for various health and travel reasons, can't always come to our concerts and rehearsals."
The choral society meets Monday nights (outside school holidays) at their hall in Percy St.
