Council workers thanked as Bruce Hwy "sink hole" repaired

10.23am:

WHITSUNDAY Regional Council Mayor Jennifer Whitney said thank you to Council workers, Main Roads engineers and the Queensland Police Service for acting so swiftly to fix the road damage which closed the Bruce Highway overnight.

Mayor Whitney said last night Council workers from our Bowen depot identified a dip in the Highway at Kangaroo Creek, 20km south of Bowen, that grew over time creating a serious issue.

"I'd like to thank Council workers, Main Roads engineers and the Queensland Police Service for working collaboratively through the night to rectify the issue," Mayor Whitney said.

"The crew from the Bowen depot identified the issue last night and acted to close the road before the situation escalated, potentially averting an accident on the highway.

"We're pleased the damage has been fixed so quickly and the Bruce Highway has been able to open, as it is the only connecting corridor between Proserpine and Bowen in the Whitsunday local government area," she said.

9.33am:

QUEENSLAND Transport and Main Roads have responded to enquiries saying that the pothole was caused by water seeping through.

"This pothole has been caused by water seeping through the pavement," a Transport and Main Roads spokesperson.

"We have done excavation and repairs throughout the night and our priority is the safety of all road users and reopening the road as soon as possible.

"We are inspecting the road and expect it to reopen this morning.

"There are diversions in place via the Peak Downs Highway and Bowen Developmental Road.

"We'll provide further updates as they become available. In the meantime, please continue to check 131940 for the latest road information."

7.33am:

BOTH lanes on the Bruce Highway at Kangaroo Creek, 30km south of Bowen, remain closed.

Repairs are currently underway and the highway is expected to reopen by midday today.

A Mackay police spokesman said there is traffic control in place and motorists can take alternative routes.

A detour is availble via the Peak Downs Highway, to Suttor Developmental Road, through Collinsville-Elphinstone Road and through Bowen Developmental Road.
