Aussie Siri’s voice to carol by candlelight in Melbourne

MACKAY entertainer Karen Jacobsen's voice can be heard on 400 million GPS and iPhones around the world.

The voice of Australian Siri will perform at Melbourne's Carols by Candlelight this year, following the release of her festive album Destination Christmas.

It's Jacobsen's ninth album on her independent label Kurly Queen, and features classics, traditional Australian carols and original Christmas songs written by Jacobsen and Janice FitzGerald.

The former Mackay North State High School student, who markets herself as The GPS Girl, appeared on Channel 9's Today Show yesterday discussing how she got the role as the voice of Siri.

She said she was living in the US when she saw an advertisement for an Australian voice actor.

Jacobsen said she spent about 50 hours recording different sounds and phrases to create a comprehensive vocabulary.

She returned to Mackay in September to host a motivational speaking event in collaboration with RACQ-CQ Rescue.

Jacobsen's Melbourne Carols by Candlelight performance will air on Christmas Eve at 8pm on Channel 9.
