Sisters celebrate end of school era at anniversary event

THE Guard sisters were among a large crowd at the 50th anniversary of the year state schools closed at Junabee and Jingarry.

Edith Lapthorne (Toowoomba), Nancy Baker and Frances Guard (both of Maleny) attended both schools.

The eldest of the trio, Mrs Lapthorne, started at Jingarry in 1948 and all three moved to Junabee when it re-opened in 1953.

"We lived on the corner of Junabee and Ryans Rds so Junabee was closer. We were able to walk to Junabee as it was close but had to ride horses to Jingarry," Mrs Lapthorne said.

Both schools closed in 1962 and children went by bus to Warwick.
