Six groups of asylum seekers sent to PNG under new deal

SIX groups of asylum seekers have now been transferred to Papua New Guinea under the resettlement deal struck with the Federal Government last month.

A flight carrying 39 single men - consisting of 35 Iranians, two Pakistanis, and two people claiming to be stateless - touched down in Manus Province on Tuesday morning.

Almost 250 asylum seekers have been transferred to PNG since the resettlement policy was announced on July 19.

Those asylum seekers found to be genuine refugees will be settled in PNG.

More than 2200 people and 30 boats have been intercepted since the PNG solution was announced.
