IF THERE is one thing Brisbane does damn well, it's play host.

It hosts international shows, concerts, festivals and top-tier sporting events, which is what's taking up a chunk of this year's mammoth events calendar.

We've pulled together six major sporting events you need to travel to Brisbane to see this year and when you check out the spread, it's easy to understand why.

NRL Double Header, May 13: The only thing better than a live footy game at Suncorp Stadium, is two on the same night. The Brisbane Broncos take on the Manly Sea Eagles and the Gold Coast Titans face the Melbourne Storm in what is the footy night to rival all others. Four teams, two battles, one place and a million reasons to be there.

Brisbane Racing Carnival, May 13 - June 10: Glitz, glamour and racing royalty will be in full swing at Brisbane's annual Channel Seven Racing Carnival celebrating the state's best food, fashion, racing and entertainment. Have your form guides at the ready as the Group 1 thoroughbreds show off their talent on some of the best tracks in the country.

Brisbane's biggest racing events are on this May and June.

Maroon Festival, May 28-31: You call yourself a fan, but until you've crossed the line into Maroon Festival fandom, you're only half way there. This year's Maroon Festival is a four-day celebration for Queensland State of Origin supporters in the lead-up to the games that divide the East Coast. Fans will have the opportunity to get up close with the players and celebrate everything Maroon.

State of Origin, May 31 and July 12: While we're talking footy, this year, Brisbane hosts both games one and three of the State of Origin. We all know the boys perform better with a cheering home crowd, so get yourselves into the stands and cheer the Maroons home for another series win.

Get yourself to Suncorp Stadium for the first or third State of Origin game to support the boys in maroon!

Wallabies V Italy, June 24: The Australian Wallabies take on Italy in a blockbuster match at Suncorp Stadium this winter. We know rugby union gets the world fired up and with passionate Italians sure to descend on Brisbane for the match, have your Aussie war paint at the ready. Keep it handy for October 21 when we take on the New Zealand All Blacks in the Bledisloe Cup, also at Suncorp Stadium.

Rugby League World Cup Semi Final, November 24: If you're not all footballed-out, November is dishing up the goods with Suncorp Stadium to host the World Cup Semi Final, which is sure to be a thrilling spectacular.
