Slade Park place to be for Max's XI game with the Mullets

THERE will be three top matches on Saturday in the Australia Day Cricket Carnival at Slade Park as part of a 46-game carnival.

Past winners Stunned Mullets and Ring-inns are drawn with Max's XI for the round robin at Slade Park on Saturday.

In the first game, last year's winners Stunned Mullets will play Casino team Ring-Inns at 8.30am.

At 11.30am, Ring-Inns will back up to play a Max's XI combination which is keen to win their first carnival at their 7th attempt.

Stunned Mullets will play Max's XI in the 2.30pm game in the first game between the teams since the 2015 final when Stunned Mullets beat Max's XI at Slade Park.

"The final in 2015 came down to the final over,” Max's XI captain Geoff Thorley said.

"Simon Young and Brodie Frizzell were two of their stars two years ago and Dean Butler from Stunned Mullets is always hard to get out.”

Most of the Max's XI combination are current or past Warwick club cricketers.

"The aggressive batting of John Cleary got us to the final two years ago and he is playing again,” Geoff said.

Max's XI plays in memory of Geoff's brother, the late Max Thorley, a Darling Downs representative cricketer as a junior and outstanding rugby league player who passed away in 2008.

"Max was part of junior and club teams with a lot of our Max's XI team,” he said.

Broncos hooker Andrew McCullough has played in the past but is not available this year.

Geoff is treasurer of the Warwick Cricket Association and expects a top carnival.

"We are back three teams to 30 this year as some teams are planning to come only every second year,” he said.

Dutch's Rudders are back to play in the social competition after entering last year for a bucks party with a difference for Chris Polkinghorne.

There are 21 teams in the main draw and nine in the social competition.
