Slithering surprise for James Lister
A QUICK call to the snake catcher on Wednesday may have saved Member for Southern Downs James Lister from a potentially lethal bite.
Mr Lister was heading back to his car after lunch at home with his wife Belinda when he noticed an eastern brown snake beside it.
“I thought it was like a rubber snake toy at first but then I took another step and it spun around at me,” Mr Lister said.
The local member quickly retreated back into the safety of his Kyoomba home.
“Then it slithered up the stairs and starting tapping at the glass,” he said.
Drew Godfrey from Stanthorpe Snake Relocation was on the scene within 15 minutes to scoop up the snake and take it away from the property.
“One drop of venom from an eastern brown snake could kill you, so it’s best to leave it alone or give me a call,” Mr Godfrey said.
Mr Godfrey says it is likely the snake was in search for water and had no intention of attacking Mr Lister.
“A snake never wants to have a confrontation with a human and will avoid it at all costs,” he said.
Mr Godfrey said he was kept pretty busy with snake catching as there’s plenty in the area.
“Unfortunately you can’t really prevent snakes from coming to your home unless you want to move somewhere like New Zealand,” he said.
Mr Godfrey said you shouldn’t have anything to fear and snakes generally won’t stick around.
“They’re nothing to fear, just to respect and it means you have a nice little ecosystem in your home,” he said.
“But, if you have kids or animals let me know and I’ll come down, it’s a 24-hour service and I’m happy to get calls whenever.”
