Difficult conditions make for a slow race to Gladstone

NO records were broken in this year's Brisbane to Gladstone, with the majority of the fleet still out on the water or retired when the presentation was originally scheduled.

First into Gladstone was the impressive multihull BOQ Team Australia, an expected line honours victor in the 50th multi-hull event.

Close behind was the monohull line honours winner Blackjack, which was at one point out in front of BOQ.

The two boats were expected to take the honours in the races, fulfilling the task in the tactical race.

The big news though is the number of retirements in the two races.

Forced back south or into land by time constraints, 10 of the mono-hull were retired by Sunday afternoon.

The retirements were joined by a small number of the 16 strong multihulls, while another few joined the cruising class by turning on the motors for a period of time.

The difficult conditions were hard even for the front runners; BOQ skipper Sean Langman admitting his crew have been much better in past events.

"We got a bit caught out Saturday morning," he said.

Langman was even surprised when Blackjack was able to inch in front, igniting the spark which pushed BOQ forward toward Gladstone.

"Even though we are in different disciplines we were in a race to get in," he said.

Barry Austin was just as frustrated as the sailors on the water, waiting long periods of time to update the big map inside the yacht club.

Austin has seen slower Brisbane to Gladstones, though.

"The longest race was a Thursday I think; this one is only a baby," he said.
