Snail mail finally arrives - more than seven years later!

AUSTRALIA Post may be trying to move with the times, but this case brings a whole new definition to the term snail mail.

When Grafton resident Marge O'Meara found an Express Post parcel in her letterbox on Monday, she had no idea what it could be.

Upon opening it she found a birthday card and $20 from her daughter in Brisbane, wishing her a happy 68th birthday.

The problem is, Ms O'Meara is now 76.

Despite a promise for 'guaranteed next day delivery', the small parcel stamped on September 20 2007, took more than seven years to arrive.

Ms O'Meara said she had a recollection of her daughter Sandra phoning after her birthday on October 2 to ask here if it had arrived, because she hadn't received her usual 'thank-you' call.

"She was a bit annoyed but we figured it wasn't diamonds or anything, so we just thought we'd let it be," she said.

Ms O'Meara said she didn't even realise it was the one and the same card until she saw that it was signed, 'Sandra, Rod and Benji-dog', a beloved family pet that passed on three years ago.

"It was then that I just knew this was the card that had gone astray," she said.

"I called Sandra and Rod and said I'm going to read you something... they couldn't believe it."

As to where it was all that time, and how it stayed in such good condition, Ms O'Meara has few suggestions.

"It must have gotten stuck somewhere but it's not battered so I don't know, but I think it's really funny now.

"I was at the post office yesterday to post a parcel and told the fellow at the counter, he said he'd never heard of that happening.

"Then my daughter-in-law leaned over and said to him, 'do you think this will get here within eight years?'"
