Snow predicted for Southern Downs tonight

UPDATE: The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting snow to fall on the Southern Downs tonight.

Forecasters say there is a slight chance of some sleet or light snow on the Granite Belt in the evening.

The expected maximum in Warwick today is going to be a chilly 9 degrees.

HOW TO GET TO SOUTHERN DOWNS SNOW HOTSPOTS

Temperatures plummeted on Saturday night, leaving thick white frost blanketing the Granite Belt yesterday morning.

Stanthorpe recorded a freezing -4.5 degrees, while it dropped to -1 degree in Warwick.

It felt even colder, with the apparent temperature (factoring in humidity and wind) still a chilly -1.8 degrees in Warwick at 7.30am.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Michelle Berry said there was a 30 per cent chance of snow, though dry air meant the region was more likely to see sleet or heavy frost.

Ms Berry said regions close to the New South Wales border had the greatest chance of snow, including Eukey and Ballandean.

Our region took out the top five coldest spots in the state yesterday, led by Stanthorpe, then Applethorpe, Kingaroy, Dalby and Wellcamp.

The forecast this week is for single digit temperatures with apparent temperatures sinking the region into sub-zero readings.

The freezing morning temperatures on the Darling Downs will continue into next weekend.

Today is expected to reach nine degrees, with a minimum of eight degrees, and bring with it light showers.

EARLIER: Snow may not have fallen on the Southern Downs, but thick frost was still enough to turn the region into a winter wonderland at the weekend.

Temperatures plummeted on Saturday night, leaving thick white frost blanketing the Granite Belt yesterday morning.

Residents hoping for a reprieve for the cold are out of luck.

Some weather forecasters haven't ruled out the chance of snow tonight.

Higgins Storm Chasing is pointing to the chance of a snowfall on the Granite Belt.

"This moisture is rather limited so we are not expecting much more than a dusting but snow is snow whether it falls for 5 mins or 5 hours," Jeff Higgins said.

"From 4pm onward any rain or showers which develop across the highest elevations in southern inland Queensland and northern inland New South Wales could contain sleet and snow."

The Bureau of Meteorology is also forecasting the chance of sleet tonight. Senior forecaster Michelle Berry said there was a 30% chance of sleet as the coldest air moves over the region tonight.

"It's a very small window of opportunity," she said.

"There's a bit of a competing factor with some dry air coming through at the same time."

If sleet or snow does fall, it's likely to be in the highest areas of the Granite Belt.

Meanwhile, most areas of the Southern Downs can expect widespread rainfall to last until this afternoon.

Ms Berry said some moderate falls were possible. "On average we're looking at rainfall totals of 5mm to 15mm," she said.

"The odd spot could be getting a bit over 20mm."

When the rain clears, cold and dry conditions will bring more frosts and sub-zero temperatures to the region.

"Minimum temperatures will plummet from Wednesday," she said.

"Frosts are likely from Wednesday in particular."

Stanthorpe is forecast to hit just 8 degrees today, while Warwick will just struggle into to double figures with a forecast of 11 degrees.
