Son follows famous Dad into motorsport
MOTORSPORT: Every sport can lay claims to sons and daughters following their parents along a sporting path.
That is certainly the case with motorsport and this weekend, former world speedway champion Jason Crump was in Warwick with son Seth at the Motorcycle Sportsmen of Queensland meeting at Morgan Park Raceway.
While Jason admits he rode motorcycles as a schoolboy back in Mildura in north west Victoria. it was speedway where he made his mark, starting with the speedway circuit in Mildura.
He won the world championship Grand Prix series held over 100 meetings a year in Europe in 2004, 2006 and 2009 and now is coaching speedway drivers and is also an accredited Motorcycling Australia coach.
Seth, 14, goes to school at the Gold Coast, and competed in production and Formula 3 classes at the weekend meeting at Morgan Park Raceway.
"I rode eight races in all, I just want to have fun,” he said.
"Morgan Park Raceway is a fun track, I come to every meeting of the Motorcycle Sportsmen in Warwick.
"I enjoy riding road bikes more than dirt bikes.”
As a parent, Jason said he wanted to give his son the best opportunity to pursue his sport.
"Some get opportunities quickly to race in Europe, others have to work their guts out to get there,” he said.
The meeting at the weekend attracted 122 riders, including 10 sidecars. One bike caught fire at the raceway. The fire was extinguised on site without the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service being called.
