South West rep jerseys the lure
TRY-SCORER Angus Croft was happy with his game yesterday as Warwick and District went down 18-6 to Toowoomba in under-14 Barrett Shield rugby league action at Eastern Suburbs.
The Warwick hooker is hoping to make the South West Mustangs under-13 team to play in the state championships this season, which gives him a chance to strive for a state jersey.
To make the Mustangs side, he knows he and his side has to perform well in future representative games.
Croft plays for the Collegians club in Warwick and Jacob Hansen plays for Eastern Suburbs and both are avid Roosters NRL supporters.
Tenterfield player Jack Evans might live in New South Wales but is a Broncos fan.
Croft, Hansen and Evans were three of the best for a Warwick and District side which had the better of the first half in the first of three games yesterday.
Toowoomba led 12-6 with five minutes to go and Warwick nearly scored before Toowoomba scored under the posts with two minutes to go to blow out the score. Warwick player Greg Hoffman showed lots of skill in two excellent off-loads before halftime.
There was a penalty for off-side from the kick-off yesterday, an area of the game which has tightened up this season.
The score in the under-14 game was 4-all with three minutes to go when Warwick looked destined to score before a Toowoomba player intercepted to run the length of the field to win the game for his side.
Harley Beckhouse was over the line for Warwick in the under-16 match but the ball was knocked out of his hands which stopped Warwick from levelling the score with Toowoomba. Both sides scored four tries but Toowoomba kicked two more goals.
Eastern Suburbs president Gary McEwan said the Warwick performances were the best for at least the past four years.
