Southern Downs carers course addresses dementia

MORE than 1,800 people are diagnosed with dementia every week.

Queensland has the second fastest growing rate of dementia, with more than 66,000 people currently living with the degenerative disease.

Alzheimer's Australia Queensland branch CEO Victoria Beedle said family carer courses offered around the state were providing imperative education for those caring for dementia patients.

An open invitation is extended to all Warwick residents and those people from surrounding areas to attend and learn about the numerous vital services available to people with dementia, family members and carers this Friday.

"Often people who are initially reluctant to attend such courses, but soon find after meeting other carers and individuals diagnosed with dementia, that realise they are not alone," Ms Beedle said.

"The many problems and challenges, plus coping strategies will be discussed in the group, and possible solutions offered.

"Every case of dementia is different and within our family carers course there's a strong emphasis on interacting with others who are living with the disease, plus valued additional input and instruction from representatives of Alzheimer's Australia (Qld)."

The family carers courses are a valued health initiative for the state's regions by assisting locals in need of assistance.

"Opportunities for follow up and maintaining contact with staff, volunteers and fellow participants well into the future is encouraged through these courses," Ms Beedle said.

Familiar topics likely to be discussed include: the importance of caring for the carer, coping mechanisms, relaxation exercises, symptoms and diagnosis, research and drug treatments, relationships with family and friends, planning for the future, legal issues, adapting to change, practical strategies, looking after yourself, plus an outline of community services that are available.

Registrations for the free course are essential -  phone the National Dementia Health on 1800 100 500 for more information.

The Warwick course this Friday will run from 9.30am to 2.30pm at Blue Care community centre at 1 Law Rd.
