Councillor calls for review of funding
SOUTHERN Downs Regional councillor Jamie Mackenzie has asked the council to reconsider its three-year funding deal with Toowoomba-based Southern Queensland Country Tourism at the general meeting tomorrow.
Cr Mackenzie said he supported the promotion and funding of the local tourist organisations.
"But the Southern Queensland Country Tourism is a regional organisation based elsewhere looking after a huge area with competing tourist businesses from the NSW border north to Kingaroy and west past Chinchilla," he said.
He raised concern over signing up for funding of almost $170,000 over three years.
"Budgets are tight and we must see value for every dollar spent by council," Cr Mackenzie said.
"$56,650 of rates dollars annually leaves the region for the Southern Queensland Country Tourism.
"This is a higher rate than that paid by the other local governments in this region.
"We spend almost $1000 per week on Southern Queensland Country Tourism.
"In return, all we get is a weekly email, only two media briefings per year, little promotion of local attractions yet attendance by SQCT personnel at lot of gatherings without much subsequent action.
"I cannot agree to a three-year agreement when there is no strategic plan nor a business plan as yet.
"If we must spend money, let's do it properly."
