Southern Downs council clarifies reason for water works

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has moved to clarify the purpose of major water infrastructure works in the region.

Council stated that no part of the Applethorpe water mains extension was related to irrigation or effluent water.

"The water to be used is treated or potable water. There is no effluent or irrigation water to be used in the project," a council representative said.

"There is no treated or potable water to be utilised for irrigation purposes."

Plans are to extend water infrastructure to cater to residential subdivisions in the medium to long term, and provide water to a strawberry grower under an established agreement.

It will also provide water to other food processing industries that establish in the area.

The project costs $682,300 with Southern Downs Regional Council contributing about $170,000 and the Royalties for the Regions fund $511,000.
