SOUTHERN DOWNS ELECTION: LNP closes in on win

AS WE head into the second day of counting to determine who will hold power throughout Queensland, the race for the seat of the Southern Downs is still wide open.

Liberal National candidate James Lister currently leads with over 78% of the votes counted, however is not claiming victory just yet.

UPDATE 1.15PM

With 82.64% of the votes counted:

James Lister - 41.31%

Josh Coyne - 20.20%

Joel Richters - 16.80%

Rob Mackenzie - 16.69%

Antonia van Geuns - 4.12%

Jay Nauss - 0.88%

UPDATE 11.15AM

Despite no claim of victory, two of James Lister's biggest opponents, Joel Richters and Rob Mackenzie, have all but conceded defeat.

It appears preferences will work against the three major contenders in trying to gain a majority.

With further polling to continue throughout the day, it is expected an announcement will be made later in the day.

With 78.15% of the votes counted:

James Lister - 41.51%

Josh Coyne - 20.73%

Joel Richters - 17.23%

Rob Mackenzie - 15.36%

Antonia van Geuns - 4.28%

Jay Nauss - 0.89%
