Southern Downs link for acclaimed artist
THE late Margaret Olley AC was a stalwart of the Australian art scene for decades with her ability to capture the mood and tone of the times.
With an art centre named in her honour, the mark she has left on the art community is immeasurable.
A Southern Downs family with a connection to Ms Olley, are the Walkers, and they took the opportunity to check her artwork out for themselves.
Two of her paintings are currently at the Stanthorpe Art Gallery, and Rachael Walker said her family jumped at the chance to attend, as well as give son Jake his first taste of the artworks.
"My husband Dallas used to live with his grandma Gertrude Engelmann (nee Olley), who was Margaret Olley's cousin,” Mrs Walker said.
"She was a very interesting character, and a lot know a bit about her.
"She passed away before Jake was born, so it is good he can see the paintings.”
