Jumpers and Jazz a huge hit for Warwick: mayor

SOUTHERN Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said last weekend of Jumpers and Jazz was possibly the biggest Warwick had ever seen.

"Based on word of mouth and everything I've seen, everything seems to be double last year's," she said.

"I've been to four functions so far, and they're all saying there have been more people than expected.

"It's just such a boost, and really wonderful."

Cr Dobie said the economic impact from the wave of new shoppers was hard to ignore.

"On Sunday, I went in to most shops on the main street, and I saw there were people in every shop buying," she said.

"The men were out looking at the cars, and the ladies were in the shops.

"For the retail industry, it's a time when people can sell quite specific things to tourists, but also locals.

"I was downtown on Saturday and bought a scarf I probably didn't need... and I'm probably going to the same thing this weekend."

Cr Dobie said festivals like Jumpers and Jazz were important for regions like Warwick for a number of reasons.

"Firstly it brings an influx of tourists to the region, which is a great value to everyone," she said.

"It's a boost of new money to the region; (tourists) spend money in shops, hotels and cafes; that all contributes to the building of the economy."

Cr Dobie said the second important side of Jumpers and Jazz was to do with the, "goodwill of having happy people in town".

"It's a boost to the community, especially at a time when people tend to stay in doors," she said.
