Southern Downs pair win polocrosse series in South Africa
POLOCROSSE: Cunningham players Ryle Waugh and Zac O'Leary were sensational in the number 1 positions as Australia clinched the under-21 polocrosse Test series in South Africa overnight Sunday.
The women play the first chukka in mixed polocrosse, the men the second and they alternate for the rest of the game.
Waugh played at No.1 (shooter) during the women's chukkas.
O'Leary took over the role in the fourth chukka and scored from the first lineup in the game where he was at the front.
Polocrosse Association of Australia vice-president Carolyn Garland said the two players from the Southern Downs had outstanding games in a strong team performance.
"Australia lost the first game of the international series on Friday and turned it around to win on Saturday to make Sunday's third Test the decider," Garland said.
"The ball skills in the final game were terrific."
One of the players to impress in the third game was Lindsey Doolan from Coffs Harbour.
The youngest member of the team, she is part of the polocrosse program at the New England Girls' School.
The Australian intermediate team was coached by Greg Davidge who shared World Cup success at Morgan Park with the Australian team.
Australia had convincing wins in the three junior Tests under the coaching of Graham Bennett.
Waugh and O'Leary will be back in club action at a Cunningham carnival on August 6-7.
Carnivals will follow on the following two weekends at Killarney and Warwick grounds.
