Southern Downs players shine in Qld youth comp
BASKETBALL: Two young Southern Downs prospects will play their final match of the under 16s Basketball Queensland Development Cup season this weekend.
Warwick player Sam Wall and Stanthorpe's Landon Gempton joined the Ipswich Energy side late in the season and immediately made their impact felt.
Gempton scored 10 points and Wall 19 in their last outing against the Sunshine Coast Phoenix, in which Energy claim a 60-point win.
Jay Clark, of the Warwick Basketball Association, who was on hand for both Ipswich foxtures, said the pair more than adapted to the level of competition, as well as getting their names out there.
"They've done quite well up there and have been getting some good minutes,” Clark said.
"A lot of it has to do with the opportunity to progress and be recognised.
"In a little country town with not too many playing basketball, there aren't as many pathways.
"When it comes to representative basketball, it's good they are being seen playing, and they haven't missed those opportunities.”
The pair take on ladder- leading Sunshine Coast Phoenix on the road today.
Wall backed up his impressive run at the representative level with another strong showing in the Warwick A-grade comp on Wednesday night.
The rising talent had 14 points, including a game high four three-pointers, helping the Juggernauts to a 67-45 win over the Demons.
Josh Cremasco led all scorers for the victors on 18 points, with Martin Fernandez chipping in for 14.
In the night's other fixture, WIRAC got back into the winner's circle with a 47-42 win against the Juniors.
Caroline Fern led the way, hitting five three-pointers on her way to a game-high 17 points.
