Southern Downs quarry battle grinds to a halt

YANGAN residents will have to wait a few more weeks for the outcome of an investigation into the town's sandstone quarry.

Early last month more than a dozen residents submitted complaints to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection about noise and dust emissions from the quarry.

The EHP inspected the mine two weeks ago.

An EHP spokeswoman said investigations were continuing.

"The EHP conducted an inspection on 16 June to evaluate if mining activities are being conducted in compliance with the site's Environmental Authority," she said.

"The operators are cooperating with EHP and further information to assist with the investigation is expected early July."

Residents held a public meeting to discuss their concerns earlier this month.

The meeting was also attended by quarry operators, with both sides given the opportunity to speak.

Members of the public concerned about noise and dust emissions can phone the EHP Pollution Hotline on 1300130372.
