Residents need to pay their rates

WITH just 32.6 percent of rates received as of today, ratepayers in the Southern Downs are reminded that rates are due by 5pm next Friday September 23.

CEO Rod Ferguson said this percentage was on a par with the same timeframe as in previous years.

"It is quite normal for most people to pay their rates in the last days before the discount deadline," said Mr Ferguson.

"However we do remind people who haven't yet paid their rates, particularly those paying by electronic means, to make sure their payment is made by 5pm next Friday.

"Only people who have paid rates and charges in full by that time will be eligible for the 10 percent discount," he said.

Payment options are on the back of rates notices.

"If people are unable to make the full payment by the due date they should contact the Rates Team on 4661 0300 and make an arrangement to pay," said CEO Rod Ferguson.

"Those people who make an arrangement and stick to it will not be charged interest on overdue rates but will lose the discount.

"Otherwise interest is charged at 11 percent (compounded and calculated daily) on amounts more than 90 days overdue from the date of issue."

Ratepayers can also set up a direct debit or make regular smaller payments during the year to minimise the amount they will be liable to pay when the rates are levied next year.

Contact the Rates Team to make these arrangements on 4661 0300.
