Southern Downs seminar helps improve on irrigation
A NEW workshop is set to spruik the benefits of low-pressure irrigation for Southern Downs producers.
To be run by Dairy Australia and Cotton CRC, the workshop near Warwick will host dairy industry irrigation and soil experts who will talk about how technology and research are being harnessed for efficient irrigation.
Dairy Australia's Technical Expert for south-east Queensland, David Hall, said the one-day smarter irrigation field day was part of a three-year trial.
"The workshop will be a great experience for producers who are thinking of investing in a low-pressure irrigator or who just want to know how to get the most out of their existing system because it's really looking at improving efficiencies for farmers," Mr Hall said.
"This is just the first in the series so we're just getting the demonstration site up and running and getting the ball rolling for the three-year period.
"There will be four speakers who will talk about soil fertility and nutrient requirements, fertigation and how to manage salt and how to schedule irrigation using soil moisture monitoring tools."
Mr Hall said the speakers would also assess the performance of a pivot, including peak water application, and calculating seasonal water requirements and how to prioritise limited water.
To be held at Heath and Brent Hoffman's dairy farm, the event is open to all producers free of charge and includes a barbecue lunch.
"People are definitely missing opportunities to have efficient irrigation systems by using different technologies to monitor water use and soil nutrients," Mr Hall said.
"In (Heath Hoffman's) case, he does have some areas on his property that are not performing as well as others, so we'll be looking at soil limitations and what we're doing that can help him to pick that up.
"We're hoping to show more people how to take the guesswork out of when they should irrigate and how much, by knowing how much root system has developed and the right amount of water when plants need it, for example."
The first smarter irrigation workshop will be held on September 16 from 9.30am to noon, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Research and Development for Profit program.
