Southern Downs storms turn photographers' eyes to skies

STORM chasers and budding local photographers had their eyes on the skies, capturing all the action of last night's storms.

Severe thunderstorms swept across the region from 3.30pm, bringing hail as large as tennis balls, strong wind and very heavy rain.

Stanthorpe and surrounding areas were smashed by hail, while the area around Clifton was slammed by strong winds and intense rainfall.

Unofficial totals of more than 50mm were recorded within an hour at Clifton, where the heaviest of the rain fell.

Warwick missed the worst of the storms, with a spectacular light show and stunning sunset giving way to just 3mm of rain.

There is a slight chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm in far eastern parts this afternoon.

Rainfall totals

Warwick: 3mm

Stanthorpe: 1mm

Allora: 14mm

Leyburn: 14mm

Goomburra: 9mm

Victoria Hill: 37mm

Bony Mountain: 23mm

Talgai: 25mm
