Southern Downs student wins regional youth of the year

STANTHORPE State High student Spencer Jensen has taken home the top spot at the regional Lions Youth Quest.

The contest requires participants to present prepared and impromptu speeches as well as challenging their general knowledge.

"I didn't really think I would get past the Stanthorpe stage,” Spencer said.

"But to get the recognition for working hard for what I had to do was pretty good.”

Spencer said the trick was knowing the audience.

"I tried to flex to my audience, the people in Lions are a little bit older - I didn't want to talk about something that is just about kids my age,” he said.

"My talk was about Australia Day which is something obviously everyone can relate to.”

Although he enjoyed the experience of public speaking, Spencer doesn't think it's the career for him.

"It's probably not my first career option, but having the skills that are developed are going to help me in whatever career I choose to go into,” he said.

"I'm looking at going into medicine and specialising from that.”

Spencer thanked his English teacher, Mr Moore, who he said helped him prepare for the competition.

Spencer will compete at the district competition in Brisbane on March 24.
