Southern Downs woman wins body sculpting comp on first try

EATING seven times a day may sound like a dream but combining it with six days of training a week for four months on a strict diet makes all that food start to lose its appeal.

But it didn't deter Stanthorpe girl Leah Williams from competing in the Australian Women's Natural Body Sculpting competition in Brisbane last weekend where she took out first place in first timers and juniors categories in the bikini division.

Williams said she was shocked when she won.

"It was very strange, I wasn't expecting any placings considering it was my first time competing,” she said.

"But it gives you that boost of confidence for the next time you're going on stage which is nice.”

She said her reason for getting into the sport was to challenge herself.

"I found my fitness was kind of plateauing out so I thought I need a goal, I need something to make me work, start working a bit hard,” she said.

"It's always been at the back of my mind as something I wanted to do.

"I've always been a bit iffy about it because it's a bit daunting being up on stage in a bikini.”

Additionally to challenging her own fitness, Williams is studying to be a personal trainer.

She said she has learnt a lot about personal training from preparing for the competition.

The body builders are judged on appearance, stage presence, poses as well as their overall physique.

"They definitely take into consideration your entire look, so hair, make up your bikini,” she explained.

Williams will go on to compete in two more competitions later this month. As for continuing in body building, Williams said it was too early to tell.

"It's been tough, it's not an easy process going through four months of strict dieting and training.

"It definitely takes a toll on your social life and relationships but having a supportive boyfriend and family has made the process a lot better.

"It'll be good to have what they call an 'off season'.

"Generally you only compete once a year so after I have my off season I'll decide.”
