Souths eye off trial against Broncos in Warwick

RUGBY LEAGUE: Former Darling Downs footballer Gerome Burns is likely to be one of the stars in the Souths Logan Magpies team to play the Brisbane Broncos in Warwick on February 16.

The Broncos' visit to Warwick will start with a Friday night dinner organised by the Warwick Cowboys and then Saturday clinics at Collegians and Suburbs junior rugby league grounds. It will be the first game played by an NRL team in the town.

Some high-profile players are expected to be in the Broncos team while others will be in Warwick for the dinner and to coach the juniors.

The Magpies have three trials for their Intrust Super Cup team early next year and coach Jon Buchanan expects he will field his best team against the Broncos.

"There may be even some players affiliated with Souths Logan in the Broncos team for the trial in Warwick,” he said.

"We have a lot of new players and I will want to look at them against the Broncos.

"We have a lot more forwards than backs from the Broncos.”

Buchanan admits his forward pack is not massive, but a couple of forwards from the Broncos would definitely add to the size of the team's pack overall.

The other Magpies trials are against teams from the cup competition.

Last season, the Magpies were third in the cup after 15 rounds before injuries struck the team hard and they finished ninth.

Souths Logan won the cup premiership in 2008.

Buchanan expects the Broncos to play most of their players affiliated with Souths Logan in the game in Warwick.

During the fixture season, the Broncos select their team for each week's NRL round and the players not needed who are affiliated with Souths Logan will then be selected in the Intrust Super Cup competition for the Magpies.

"Gerome has won colt of the year with Norths and we were lucky enough to get him, he is only 20,” Buchanan said.

"He is a fullback or five-eighth.”

Cody McIntosh is the second Darling Downs player training with Souths Logan who is a likely starter in February in Warwick.

One of the players set for the game in Warwick will be Souths Logan backline star Guy Hamilton who was the leading scorer in the cup competition in the 2018 season.
