Souths Tigers keep on fighting for TRL survival

RUGBY LEAGUE: Tomorrow (Friday) is decision day for Southern Suburbs Tigers in their struggle to remain in the Toowoomba Rugby League competition.

The famous club is facing the biggest crisis in its 70-year history with a critical shortage of senior players threatening to sideline its A and Reserve grade teams this season.

Souths released a club statement last Friday outlining its predicament as the TRL looks to complete its draw for the 2018 year, kicking off on March 17.

The urgency of the Tigers' position has drawn a strong response from players and former players and was followed by a meeting of club members and supporters on Tuesday night.

Both Wattles and Warwick clubs have expressed their support in the Daily News for Souths. Wattles are hoping to play Souths in trial games on the weekend before the start of TRL fixtures.

Souths president Rex Zeeman said the meeting drew a cross-section of attendees and discussions were positive.

But the Tigers have until only tomorrow to come up with the necessary numbers and quality of players to retain their place in the competition.

Zeeman stressed the club is financially secure and retains a strong junior base.

But since the resignation in late November of captain-coach Dan Holmes, Souths' player retention and recruitment has stalled.

"The meeting mood was quite positive and upbeat and everyone is keen to see us on the field this season," Zeeman said yesterday.

"We are working the phones and social media.

"There is a lot of rhetoric.

"We have the nucleus of last year's team and plenty of players and former players wanting to help out.

"But it will come down to how many we get at training on Thursday night and the quality of the teams we hope to field.

"We want to be competitive and it's important we are.

"But the bottom line is we need to know on Thursday.

"The club would like to thank the TRL for their understanding and willingness to work with us through this tough time.

"The TRL needs to get on with its season draw so we will make our call on Friday.

"We're hopeful."

Souths train at Norman Park tonight from 6pm.
