Speaker shares twists and turns of life

WHEN Dr Heidi Parkes received an invitation to speak at the Zonta International Women’s Day breakfast, it was the last thing she expected.

Dr Parkes, an accomplished medical and horticultural researcher looks forward to sharing her experiences.

“I was completely taken by surprise,” Dalveen-based apple researcher said.

“I felt very honoured when I received the email.”

Dr Parkes said she considered the event an excellent opportunity.

“I think it’s a great time to recognise the achievements of women in our communities and around the world, and also recognise the issues facing women,” she said.

“Zonta does wonderful work advocating for women.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for me to meet the Zonta members and other members of the community.”

Dr Parkes said there were many issues for women, particularly on a global scale.

“We are very fortunate in Australia, the last 50 years has seen great improvements in work opportunities and equality for women,” she said.

“Locally, the last 12 months has seen a lot in the news on domestic violence which is still an issue for a lot of women.

“Globally, I would have to say equality and access to education are ongoing issues.”

Dr Parkes will share the lessons learnt, twists and turns she has taken to get where she is today.

The Zonta International Women’s Day breakfast will be held at the Warwick RSL’s King’s function room on Tuesday, March 8, from 6.45am.

Tickets ($35 for adults, $30 for students) are available from Style Shoes until March 1.
