Speedsters rack up fines over busy Christmas week

MORE than 2000 people have been busted speeding on the region's roads in six days.

Two people have died on the region's roads and 21 people were injured in 18 crashes across the Southern police district, which includes the Southern Downs.

A young man and an elderly woman died in a head-on crash on Saturday morning at Cunnamulla.

Fixed cameras and mobile police radars caught 2009 speedsters since the Queensland Police Christmas/New Year road safety campaign kicked off on December 23.

Police nabbed 77 drink-drivers from 13,051 road breath tests and booked 32 drivers for using their mobile phones.

Up to 12.01am yesterday, 27 people have been busted for not wearing a seatbelt and there have been 517 other road rule offences.

The statistics are part of Queensland Police's Christmas road safety campaign, Operation Crossroads, which kicked off on December 23 and ends on January 3.

The Southern Region covers Ipswich, Toowoomba and Warwick.
