WATER restrictions were slapped on Warwick and Yangan yesterday after a water main broke near Leslie Dam.

Southern Downs Regional Council workers rushed to make temporary repairs to the aging 1960s pipe and a media release explaining that water was restored was issued at about 3.30pm.

A temporary fix was installed at the point of leakage in the 600mm Leslie Dam main by 11.30am and council then continued with pressure testing.

Residents may now use water as per normal water usage guidelines.

"This has been a tremendous effort by our water maintenance and treatment staff. I'd like to thank all the staff who worked so quickly and professionally," engineering director Peter See said.

"I'd also like to thank all residents for their co-operation in conserving water during this outage; there was a considerable reduction in usage on what has been a very hot day."

Council will make permanent repairs once additional parts are available.

This water main is part of the original Leslie Dam pipeline built in the 1960s.

"Council is in the process of assessing all the current water and sewerage infrastructure in Warwick, some of which dates back to the 1940s, as part of its overall asset management and capital works replacement program," Mr See said.

Meanwhile there is limited pedestrian access and a changed speed limit on McCahons Bridge following heavy vehicle damage.

A 40kmh speed limit has been imposed on road users of the bridge.

"This means you can still walk over the bridge, but cyclists, motorised scooters and strollers cannot use this footpath at the moment," Mr See said.

"It is likely to remain partially closed for at least a couple of weeks.
