Sponsor steps up for charity

BRETT McKenzie believes in sustainability, not just for the homes he builds but the community groups he supports.

Sustainable Home Design CEO Mr McKenzie will be the major sponsor at the Cowboy's major charity rodeo event, on May 9.

"We are very thankful that Brett has come forward as a sponsor," Cowboys vice president Don Browne said.

"It's a huge help," he said.

Also owner of the Yangan Cash and Carry, Mr McKenzie said he has had a life-long connection with both rugby league and the Southern Downs, "I understand the challenges sports clubs face today".

"Construction and rugby have always had a close affiliation," he said.

Previously treasurer of the Ipswich Jets, the father-of-four has been in contact with the Warwick Cowboys "directly and indirectly over the years".

"I had to help the club I was part of out of a difficult position before, it can be a very hard thing to do without at bit of a hand," he said.

"Sponsoring was a quick overnight decision."

However his relationship with the Warwick side was not always as amicable when he played for Gatton during the 80s. "We were extremely competitive," Mr McKenzie laughed.

When he isn't watching his boys on the field Mr McKenzie is building the business with the help of his team of 13 staff.

Established in 1993, Mr McKenzie planned to follow his lifetime passion for sustainable architecture and sustainable construction on his return from a three-year work and travel stint.

"I went overseas to learn skills in construction and to travel," he said.

Since that time Mr McKenzie assisted in the construction of Olympic buildings in Barcelona; docklands revitalisation in the UK, Benetton formula one race car development building and nuclear-proof communication bunkers.

However Sustainable predominately specialises in the development, construction and landscape of sustainable environmentally friendly homes.

While Mr McKenzie himself is based in the Southern Downs his business now extends throughout the Southern Downs, the Gold and Sunshine Coast and Brisbane.
