Warwick Sporters Golf Club
LAST Wednesday Sporters hosted the annual Crime Stoppers Charity Day with 80+ starters, competing for a strong range of prizes. Sporters president Keith Farrell presented a donation to Crime Stoppers in the amount of $800, continuing the many years of support by Sporters for this worthwhile cause. Today we see the final of the Sporters Shootout for 2018, with the top 19 qualifiers competing for a range of trophies. The spectacle of 19 qualifiers all teeing off together from the 1st tee is worth a visit to the club. Qualifiers are reminded that they must be at the clubhouse no later than 8.30am for sign-in and photos for a 9am sharp tee off. Non-qualifiers are reminded at a usual stableford event, sponsored by the Pro Shop will commence around 11.30am to give the shoot-out time to clear the early holes. Members are also reminded that the $10 membership for the year is now due. All members are encouraged to peruse the proposed rule changes that will take effect on 1 January next. I particularly like the new OOB/Lost Ball rules, should save a lot of time and angst in players having to return to the tee! Next Week we play Warwick Hotel Trophy, and the following week in the Danny Lyons Sports event. And our golf thought for the week; 'The grass is always greener on the other side of the Hill' (unless you are on the 14th tee!).
Warwick Men's Golf
DECLAN Murphy has come of age and is the new Warwick Golf Club champion. Young Dec has come through the grades winning championships along the way but hit the big time with his hard-fought win in the club championship on Sunday at the Warwick Golf Club. He set up his win up with his first round 69 but followed that up with 75 and 79 to bring a number of other players into the fight. However, after a close fluctuating battle with Kris McLennan over the last round, he finally won by three shots. Dec was only one shot in front of Kris teeing off the last and put his second shot in the greenside bunker. Meanwhile Kris hit a good tee shot but unfortunately, he landed his second on the backside of the 18th green which kicked out of bounds and that was the difference in the end. Declan finished with a four-round total of 298 to beat a game Kris with his 301 finish.
Defending champion Tim Sutton was third with 304 and then Geoff Hinze with 309. Declan has always been a popular member of the club right from the beginning of his junior days and he has always conducted himself in exemplary fashion around the course and clubhouse so it was a well-received win at presentation as Dec received his wonderful trophy donated by Helloworld Travel Stanthorpe. The club greatly appreciates the support of this well recognised travel agency. The B-grade championship went to another young member in Cameron Watt. Cameron started the final round three shots behind the leader Brendan Landrigan but played well under the pressure to ground out the win. In the end, Cameron had a five-shot advantage with his 345 to defeat Mark Thomas and Brendan Landrigan who both finished on 350.
The C-grade championship saw Wayne Wiedman win by three shots from the multiple championship winner Gunter Nicklich. Wayne hasn't been playing much golf leading up to the championship so did very well in holding off the wily Gunter after having a three-shot advantage teeing off in the final round. Wayne finished on 382 with Gunter on 385 and Trent Watts on 386. The championships were very generously sponsored by Hutchison Quarries and the club greatly appreciates their new sponsorship. The other big winner on the day was that good aging golfer Eamon Cockram. Cocky won the Veterans Championship with a four-round total of 320 which was good for a very comfortable 9 shot win over Charlie Morrison. Simon Macdonald played his best round of the championships on the third round Saturday with a 75 off the stick. He not only won the nett event on Saturday with that score but that was a big help in Simon winning the best 72-hole nett for "A" grade. Brett Donovan scored the best 72-hole nett in B grade with his first round 84 gross setting that up while Gunter Nicklich won the 72-hole net C grade with his consistency. The 72-hole net trophies were generously donated by hard working club stalwart Angus Cargill who can be seen regularly mowing the course during the week and the club is indebted to Angus for his support.
Josh Hynes didn't go home empty handed as he scored the best gross of any junior over the four rounds with scores of 81, 85, 85 and 83. As mentioned earlier Simon Macdonald made the trip from Toowoomba worthwhile with his nett win on Saturday. His 65-net won by a single shot from the good golfer Eamon Cockram, Brendan Landrigan and Evan Pfeffer all on 66. Other results from Saturday saw the NTP's as Tony Kahler on 5, Chris Hynes on 7, Ben Griffiths on 9 and Cam Watt on 16.
The pro pin on 11 saw Cam Watt win 3 balls, Shaun Campbell 2, Geoff Hinze and Mal Galloway one ball each. The 13th pro pin saw Mick Payne win 3 balls, Nick Owens 2, Peter Boney and Geoff Hinze one ball each. The run down saw a ball to Messrs Tate, Boney, Hewson, Pete Farrell, Nick Owens, Cam Watt, Adcock and Rhys Farrell. The Sunday results saw NTP winners as Dave Speedy on 5, Chris Hynes on 7, John Brandon on 9, Jay Roberts on 11 and Brett Donovan on 16, The 13th Pro Pin saw Brendan Landrigan win 4 balls, Don Stewart 2, and Dec Murphy, Slim Eldridge, Scott McLennan and Brett Donovan one ball each.
The run-down saw Messrs Roberts, Chris Hynes, Simon Macdonald and Nick Owens all win a ball. Well, the big weekends of golf saw good fields, good camaraderie and a beautiful course presented in fantastic condition so congratulations to all concerned. We can do it all again next weekend with the Red Rooster Rumble on Friday and The Malt House Single Stableford on Saturday. The Sunday nett event went to Ross Bell with a nett 67 which was one shot better than Rhys Farrell and Jay Roberts both on 68. Ross declared his lesson from Sam Eaves earlier in the week made the difference.
