Sporters to hold shootout next week at Warwick Golf Club
GOLF: Neil Carney is the tip to win as 19 Warwick Sporters Golf Club members tee off in the Wade Real Estate Shootout at 9am Wednesday.
The festivities will start with a Calcutta on Sunday night at the Hawker Rd Function Centre.
The 19 qualifiers have the best four combined stableford points scores during the past year in Sporters golf.
One golfer is eliminated on each hole so the field is only two on the 18th.
Stanthorpe player Henry Kelly won last year from runner-up Neil Carney.
"Neil plays very well to his handicap and is the tip to go one better than last year,” sponsor Stuart Wade said.
"Everyone is nervous at the start and no one wants to be eliminated in front of their peers.
"The key is to be patient and not try too hard.
"I have won one shootout and remember my worst result was when I was the fourth eliminated so was able to have social drinks for the rest of the day.”
Wayne Watt is playing in the shootout for the first time and said he had been aiming to be in the 19 qualifiers for the past 10 years.
"I will have a bit of practice in the next week,” Watt said.
Warwick Sporters Golf Club president Keith Farrell said players, sponsors and supporters were welcome to the shootout calcutta at the Hawker Rd Function Centre on Sunday from 6pm.
"We will meet for dinner at six and start the calcutta at seven,” Farrell said.
The crowd can then bid on each of the 19 players with all money raised at the calcutta going back to the buyers of the first, second, third and last placed players in the shootout.
