Masters hockey

Report from ladies masters championships in Townsville.

Day 1: We played against Townsville 2 first up and lost 3-0. Defence was strong and Narelle had a great game in goal. And it was hot.

The second game at 3pm was against Brisbane 6. We won 2-1. Exceptional defence from Jody, Sarah, Shannon, Yaz and Kerri and the team is working really well together under Shannon's guidance.

Goals scored by Sharron Cooper and a deflection by Rosie Corney off a pass from Leisa Nowlan. It was also really hot during that game too.

We are playing really well given it's blisteringly hot and we have no subs.

Day 2: First up we played Mackay 3 and it was the battle of the sisters as Celene and Kelli came up against each other on opposing teams. It was a cracker of a game and we went down 3-1. We were awarded two strokes in this game and Shannon popped one in the corner.

Coming 3rd in our pool, it was then the battle of the Darling Downs in the crossovers as we came up against Toowoomba 2. Shannon potted a goal off one of our many short corners and it was enough for us to secure the win 1-0.

It was a gruelling first two days without subs and I think we have gained the admiration of many others around the place for never giving up.

Injury count: A few extra shiners on our legs but we're all still standing and having a marvellous time.

Day 3: It was an early start for the team as we took the field at 7.15am for our final game against Brisbane 6. The legs were hard to get going but our defence continued to hold strong, the midfielders were on fire and the forwards pushed on with their attack.

After 60 minutes of hockey we were rewarded with a 2-0 victory to finish 5th in Div 5 with goals scored by Leisa and Rosie.

All 11 players played every single minute of every single game. We looked on enviously at our opposition's sub line-ups and we just kept going. I don't think any of us have anything left in the tank.

A massive thanks to all players for great team spirit. Thanks to Narelle for giving up your manager's role to play in goal for us. You were brilliant.

Thanks to Mary for looking after us and controlling our unruly (non-existent) subs. Thanks to Kerri and Celene for taking on tech duties - one more thing to add to the list but we appreciate you both stepping up.

And a massive thanks to Shannon Armbruster for not only playing and coaching the team but for being our umpire. On top of our five games, Shannon umpired another six.

Huge thanks to Yaz for coming into the team once again from South Australia. And thanks to Mary and Kerri for bringing our gear up and back and for Telstra Warwick for helping us out with some sponsorship.

Final injury count: A few more bruises but our spirit is intact and we're all still standing. The WHA would like to add that we are incredibly proud of their effort and commitment and they are a wonderful example of the WHA spirit for our juniors.
