Sports star David Goodwin's award news relayed to Germany
DAVID Goodwin might be in Germany, but he is over the moon with news that he is the Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Senior Sports Star of the Year.
Stef McConnell was at the Goodwin table of 15 and sent a photo of the presentation and within five minutes, David received it on his phone just after lunch in Germany.
His father Lindsay said David had been trying for years to win an overall award.
"He won his first junior monthly award in gymnastics while in primary school at Warwick East State School," Lindsay said.
David completed his secondary education at The Scots PGC College and then competed in showjumping in America for a year before completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane.
Lindsay said David stated at the time he wanted something to fall back on, but the dream of representating Australia in showjumping took over.
His win on Monday night was based on performances in Australia in 2013, but he has now been selected in the Australian team to compete in the Nations Cup in Denmark in a fortnight.
The Australian team of four is now based in Germany after two of the team arrived from America last weekend.
Warwick RSL Memorial Club's Club Person of the Year, Renae O'Dea, was surprised to win the award.
"It boosted my confidence about my netball umpiring and how much I have done," she said.
"Now that I have achieved that, it encourages me to strive for higher honours.
"I loved how everyone's story on the night was completely different and the feeling of how everyone's family was involved."
