Spring clean and help National Op Shop Week cause
LIFELINE Darling Downs and South West Queensland are urging residents to get behind National Op Shop Week this week, with the Warwick store ready to take your donations.
The week before spring is a timely reminder for people to clear their wardrobes of clothing no longer needed, but in good condition, and donate the items to their local charity op shops.
A joint initiative of Do Something! and the National Association of Charitable Recycling Organisations, the week seeks to boost the stocks and sales of quality clothing and thus help the charities raise more funds for their work in the community.
"Donations of quality, saleable clothing and furniture are essential to meet the ever growing demand for affordable clothing and reducing the cost of living for families," Lifeline CEO Derek Tuffield said.
"Funds raised at Lifeline Shops then help support our vital counselling services in the community."
Kerryn Caulfield, CEO of NACRO said charity op shops were integral to the fabric of Australian society.
"Whether it is the volunteers that staff them, the diversity and inexpensive clothes they provide, or the opportunity to participate by donating, Australians love our charity op shops," Ms Caulfield said.
"We like the fact that the items we donate and the money raised from them will be put to good use."
Ms Caulfield said Australian charity recyclers divert two billion items (over 300,000 tonnes) of clothing from landfill each year through clothing donation bins and in-store donations.
Also, a reminder that Warwick's St Vincent de Paul's 'sidewalk bazaar' with op shop bargains will run 9.30am-4pm daily until Friday at their Grafton St store.
