Springsure rider wins a second ladies silver cup
CAMPDRAFTING: Toni O'Neill has won her second ladies campdraft in seven years at the Warwick Rodeo and Campdraft.
The Springsure rider went into the final yesterday afternoon in equal second spot on 89.
Shelley Curr from Mt Isa was first into the arena and scored 86 on Dartagnan to take her score to 173 for two rounds and the lead.
Two rides later, Wyreema campdrafter Kellie Bond scored 86 on Special Destiny for a 173 total and a share of the lead.
O'Neill was seventh into the area and scored 90 on Confetti which gave her a six-point lead.
Tamworth rider Kristy Lee Fogarty was 19th on course and added 85 to her first round score of 88 and joined Curr and Bond in second place.
Warwick finalist Lisa Kiss scored 73 on top of 87 in the first round for a score of 160 on Walcha.
Allora rider Sarah Campbell had a tough steer and didn't score after cut out.
Campbell was one of the last five riders on course and one of four on 88 with each needing 91 for a share of the lead.
Of the four on 88, Debbie Dodwell from Bethungra (NSW) did the best with 84 on Wallabah Excel for a total of 172 and a share of fifth with Clermont rider Nikki Marshall on Classy49er and Ben Lomond campdrafter Gloria McCormack on Clearchoice One More Dare.
O'Neill scored 23 for cut out in the final, the same as New South Wales rider Pennie Vary on Riverview Escort.
A ride-off was needed to determine the cut out winner and O'Neill scored another 23 for her second win of the day.
"I was happy with my ride in the final,” O'Neill said.
She said going into the final she wasn't over confident.
"It is exciting to win a second ladies draft in Warwick,” she said.
Her first win was in 2011 on her horse Roma so she has won on two different horses.
She has placed previously on Confetti, a 12-year-old mare, in the ladies in Warwick.
The sport of campdrafting is a great leveller with O'Neill admitting she hadn't qualified for the second round in any other campdrafts this year in Warwick.
As for the future, O'Neill said she planned to compete in Warwick for at least another 20 years.
This morning, the action starts at 7am with round 2 of the Black Toyota Canning Downs Campdraft and then first round and finals action in the Ascot Angus and Charolais Champion of Champions Campdraft.
