Sprints lure driver back home

GOLD Coast resident Bob Bowden returns to his former hometown of Warwick at least four times a year, attracted by the circuit at Morgan Park Raceway and the camaraderie of drivers in the Queensland Super Sprints Series.

Bowden competed in rallies for seven years back in the 1970s and only returned to motor racing two years ago.

“My wife Christine passed away three years ago and the kids have grown up so I'm back to racing,” Bowden said.

“I wasn't a golfer or a bowler but enjoyed motor racing, and it has become my passion.

“I joined a car club on the Gold Coast, did one or two events and it had me hooked.”

He is also hooked on a specific vehicle, driving the same make of car he drove in the 1970s – a Datsun 180B SSS.

While it is nice to return home with a trophy as he did this weekend, winning his class, Bowden is even keener to better his time around the track, which he also achieved, shaving two seconds off his previous best.

“I haven't changed the car, just refined my braking and cornering technique to get the best out of the car,” he said.

Bowden said he is impressed by the attitude of drivers towards each other.

“It is not dog-eat-dog like in the V8 Supercars,” Bowden said.

He operated an optometry practice in Warwick for 15 years, and now works as an optometrist on the Gold Coast.

He competes in an average of two race meetings a month, including the super sprints at Warwick and Stanthorpe, the Mt Cotton Hill Climb, and occasional events at Lakeside and Queensland Raceway. He has also driven in the Leyburn Sprints.
