Sprints stalwarts ready to hit the track

YVE Stocks will be at Leyburn driving her Cobra for the 18th time but the little racing car has an even better record than that.

Her partner, Chris Hatfield, drove the car in the Leyburn Sprints in the inaugural event and had one win in his first two years on the street circuit.

The couple moved to Warwick a decade ago, primarily due to Morgan Park.

They headed from Brisbane to Warwick on many occasions to find most of the motels booked out so decided to move to the area and start a B&B.

Now they are close to Morgan Park Raceway and operate the Pitstop Lodge B&B, in Canning St.

"We bought an old house with potential for a B&B and then bought the house next door to live in," Stocks said.

Hatfield, who operated a plastic components manufacturing business in Brisbane, said he had no regrets about moving to Warwick.

Stocks stressed she was in motor racing for the fun and not the winning but has won her class at Leyburn and recorded some placings.

"I received a cheque for $100 for the fastest female driver one year," she said.

Hatfield has won races in the Queensland Motor Racing Championships and won his class at Leyburn in the red Cobra.

"The aim is just to have fun," he said.

For the 20th time the couple will be at the Leyburn Sprints today and, most importantly, a red Cobra will be there.

"Chris built the car himself from a kit in 1995 and we have had very little trouble," she said.

"It is a very reliable car, there is just a bit of wear and tear."

Stocks said the highlight at Leyburn was the camaraderie and mateship.

"We all know one another, it is a terrific atmosphere," she said.

"A highlight this year will be the anniversary dinner which we will be attending."
