Spud now part of trucking stardom

WARWICK truckie Garry "Spud" Murphy is back home after the weekend of a lifetime in Alice Springs with family and a few mates.

Mr Murphy was inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame in Alice Springs on Saturday after almost half a century of service to the transport industry.

He retired in 2006 due to ill health.

Three trucking mates - John Byrne, Francis Lyons and Tony Roche - made the trip to Alice Springs with Mr Murphy and family members.

His son Gordon said he hadn't seen so many truck drivers in the one place.

"They inducted 150 into the Wall of Fame on the day," he said.

A few words were read out on each inductee, which Gordon said showed the amazing level of service and dedication by the inductees.

"They are dedicated all right," he said.

The Wall of Fame is on the road from the town to the airport and there were plenty of old trucks and memorabilia for the Warwick group to view on Saturday.

"Some trucks like Dad drove down the years were part of the display," Gordon said.

While much of the driving career of Mr Murphy as an owner-driver was in the eastern states, he did drive road trains to the Northern Territory for a period.
