Squash player stars at junior and open state levels
CAMERON Darton has won a Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Month award after continuing his squash success.
The Warwick Rose Squash Club member and SOTE student placed 14th in a field of 36 in the under-17 division in the Australian Junior Squash Open in Darwin earlier this year.
He came up against a field of competitors from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, New Caledonia and PNG.
He was one of three players from Warwick who represented Darling Downs at the state school championships in Rockhampton. Darton played in A division and was selected as No.3 player for Queensland.
An ankle injury at football denied him the chance to represent Queensland and vie for Australian selection but he played strongly for the Voyage Fitness team which won the premier grade junior football grand final.
Last month at age 16, he competed in the Queensland open squash championships and won division 2. He will be one of the monthly winners vying for major awards early next year at a night at Hawker Rd Function Centre.
