St Mary's School races into athletics season
ATHLETICS: Rooney and Kelly houses tied for first in ball games at the St Mary's School Sports yesterday.
The school ran its field events and 800m on Friday and it was sprints and ball games on day 2 when all the students at the school headed to Hamilton Oval for six hours of fun.
Rooney is the red team and won the other three trophies for house supremacy.
In the battle for the relay trophy, it was Rooney winning from Potter with Kelly third.
It was a close battle in field events with Rooney finishing with 357 with runners-up Potter on 335.
The battle for overall aggregate was close with Rooney on 987. Potter students recorded 930 points and Kelly 723.
Two of the prestigious awards at the St Mary's Sports Carnival are the Robin Miller Memorial Shield/Medallion for the 11-year-old boys with the highest points.
Jack Young was the winner to carry on an outstanding season which saw him win in cross country and place in the 1500m at the Daily News Pentath-run.
The Robin Miller Trophy for a six-year-old with the fastest sprint time was won by Zac Wheeldon.
Times, distances and heights of the St Mary's students will be used to determine the number of students who have qualified for the Southern Downs trials.
The athletes who make it to Southern Downs will be aiming to make the district team to compete at the regional championships in Toowoomba.
School athletics is hotting up with two days of athletics at Warwick West State School, today and Thursday.
The Warwick State High School House Athletics will be held over two days due to the large number of students at the school.
The first day of the high school carnival will be this Friday and then day 2 is on July 24.
The culmination of the season for secondary students will be the Warwick All School Sports on August 13.
