St Mary's v Highfields

COACH Dave Carr just wants his charges to have a fun time as the St Mary's Development Cup squad plays in the Super 8s Gala day in Toowoomba today.

The St Mary's squad will play at Clive Berghofer Stadium.

St Mary's plays Highfields State School at 10.10am and, depending on results, will play a second game early in the afternoon.

To qualify for the gala day, St Mary's beat a combined Allora schools team 18-16 in its first game and then had a 40-10 win against a combined Stanthorpe schools side.

Carr said the squad had trained each Tuesday for the three weeks.

“We have concentrated on defence in our training sessions using two tackling bags as training aids,” Carr said. “Watching NRL games, it seems defence is a feature of winning sides.

“While we are not going up there to lose, the aim is to enjoy the day, build up mateship and improve the rugby league skills on each player.”

Last week, ARL development officer Lennie Currie was at St Mary's School upper campus and took all students for skills sessions which concentrated on passing and running with the ball.
