Stand up and speak out against bullying at action day event

THE tragic death of Dolly Everett rocked Warwick to the core and our own Southern Downs mayor has spoken out about relentless online abuse she has endured.

Cr Dobie has been running a fierce campaign to raise awareness about cyberbullying in the community, which is culminating on the National Day for Action Against Bullying and Violence on Friday.

An event will be held at Rose City Shoppingworld between 10am and noon with a range of community organisations providing information including the Queensland Police, Southern Downs Regional Council and Southern Downs Suicide Prevention Group.

Cr Tracy Dobie said there would be presentations and information booths set up.

"It's a national action day and whilst they are not attractive topics, they are in our community,” Cr Dobie said.

"It's important to raise the awareness of bullying and violence in our community and make people aware of the services available.”

Cr Dobie said attending the event was as important for children as it was for adults.

"Children in particular that do encounter bullying and violence there are opportunities for them to develop their coping mechanisms,” she said.

Southern Downs Suicide Prevention Group director Johnno Felton said pamphlets and counselling services would be on hand during the event, which will act as a forum for those affected by bullying.

"They can put their case forward, this is all about getting changes. We've got to start here,” Mr Felton said.

The event is free to attend.
