Stanthorpe dump ready for $500k facelift

THE Stanthorpe waste facility is getting a $500,000 upgrade to make it more environmentally and user friendly.

This will come about with the adoption of the Southern Downs Regional Council's 2013/2014 Budget during yesterday's general meeting.

The council has set aside only $140,000 for the project with the rest of the money coming from other projects completed under budget in previous years, as well as money from other projects no longer going ahead.

Director of Planning and Environment Ken Harris said the upgrade included building a roof over the bins, bigger storage space for tyres and oil and an onsite area to handle items to large for the waste bins.

"The roof will keep water out of the waste bins which will assist in preventing the bins from deteriorating and will also cut down on the weight of the bins for the trucks to remove," he said.

"This new area will address safety concerns by ensuring residents do not have to access the tip face directly.

Stanthorpe's waste facility is not the only one getting an upgrade though, with $240,000 going towards improvements at the Maryvale waste facility.

This project will also mean the addition of a roof and extra space for waste dumping.

The council plans to apply for a subsidy from the State Government to cover about 40% of the costs for both projects.
