Stanthorpe SES upgrades still unsure

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Councillors are waiting on more information before they decide if they will grant the Stanthorpe SES group $2795 worth of building materials for upgrades.

Engineering services director Peter See recommended the councillors pass on the grant during Tuesday's committee meeting.

The money is needed to install a secure storage area, renovate and improve the toilets, install a doorway between the SES unit building and the rural firefighters building and install downpipes to harvest water from the roof.

The director explained to councillors that the building was owned by the council.

"I believe it is our responsibility," Mr See said.

"The local controller has indicated that qualified labour will be provided by the group to complete the work."

Councillor Jo McNally acknowledged it as a fairly small amount of money.

"I am worried we are going to keep getting hit up," she said.

"This sort of thing should come to budget.

"I think there has to be a better process so we don't have things keep coming to us out of budget."

Cr Vic Pennisi wanted to clarify what toilets were being repaired.

"I want to clarify if it is the new toilet block in the building," he said.

While Cr Neil Meiklejohn was concerned were the money was going to come from.

"I would like it to lie on the table until the general meeting," he said.

The other councillors agreed and the issue will be considered again next Wednesday.
