Star basketballer is guest speaker

FORMER United States Basketball League star Michael McDaniel is guest speaker at tonight’s Daily News/Warwick Loan Centre Senior Sports Star of the Year awards at the Warwick RSL Club.

McDaniel had four moves in his school years living in Germany and two United States cities before settling in Hawaii.

He played for the Hawaii Pacific University team in division one in the National Amateur Inter-collegiate Association competition and shared championship success in 1993, the only title won in basketball by a team from Hawaii.

McDaniel came to Australia to play in 1995 and again in 1997-1998 before playing for the Kansas City Razorbacks and Connecticut Sky Hawks in 1999 in the United States Basketball League, the second-tier competition under the NBA.

He was traded during the season and was involved in the play offs for Sky Hawks.

McDaniel also played trial games for NBA team, the Dallas Mavericks.

During his basketball career in the United States, McDaniel played against some legends, including Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.

He settled in Warwick three years ago and plans to make the Southern Downs home.

McDaniel works in Warwick, coaches junior and senior basketball and coaches the regional open team.

He is also a star Warwick player and one of the stars of a Darling Downs regional final win in 2008 and runner-up finish last year.

The Warwick basketball coach plans to spread his sporting wings this year by playing some games of AFL with the Redbacks in the Darling Downs competition.

He said work commitments would restrict his AFL appearances but he was still keen to play some games where his height and agility will be major assets.
