Star maker on the way

BRENDON Smith lists training boxers for world title fights in Las Vegas as some of his fondest memories in a successful career as a trainer.

The Toowoomba boxing promoter/trainer who operates Smithy's Gym in Anzac Ave, will travel to Warwick on Monday night as guest speaker at the Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Year awards night.

Smith followed in the footsteps of his father, who was a fighter and then trainer.

He won a bronze medal for Australia in the Madan Cup in Indonesia before turning his attention to training at age 19, after being asked by three boys to teach them boxing.

Within two years, he had the largest team of boxers in the country and won the club of the year award twice.

Smith has had fighters compete at the highest level around the world, including South Africa, England, Korea, USA, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Thailand and Philippines.

He has worked with world champions in training camps as sparring partners in preparations for world title fights for Toowoomba boxer Michael Katsidis.

"I also had the luxury to work beside many great fighters on a daily basis - Manny Pacquiao, Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley and Kostya Tszyu - to name a few," Smith said.

South African boxer November Ntshingila and Katsidis are his two world champions so far but, on March 9, Smith hopes the number increases to three as Les Sherrington fights in Townsville for the WBF super middleweight world title.

Some of the world title fights for his charges were in Las Vegas in America.

On Monday night, Smith will be interviewed and answer questions at the dinner.

The Warwick Credit Union will present $500 to the junior sports star of the year and the Condamine Sports Club $250 to the Doc Bodimeade Memorial Encouragement Award winner.

A presentation will be made to each winner on the night.
